Still Choosing You
Book 1 Chapter 6 — Scene 6: SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT
Busy wasn't the right word anymore.
Emma realized that on a Sunday afternoon.
Daniel sat at the dining table.
Laptop open.
Phone beside him.
Several printed reports spread across the surface.
The dining table had slowly become something else over the past few weeks.
Part office.
Part workspace.
Part reminder that work never seemed finished.
Emma stood in the kitchen washing fruit.
From where she stood, she could see Daniel clearly.
He wasn't typing.
He was reading.
The same page.
Again.
And again.
A few seconds later, he checked his phone.
Then his email.
Then returned to the report.
The sequence repeated.
Report.
Phone.
Email.
Report.
Email.
Phone.
The movements had become almost automatic.
Emma dried her hands and carried the fruit to the table.
Daniel barely noticed her sitting down.
Not because he was ignoring her.
Because he was somewhere else.
Mentally.
Still at work.
Still inside whatever pressure followed him home.
She placed a small plate beside him.
"You haven't eaten anything."
Daniel blinked.
His eyes shifted from the report to the fruit.
"Oh."
A pause.
"Thanks."
He picked up a slice.
Took a bite.
Then immediately looked back at the report.
Emma watched him.
The movement felt strange.
Not rude.
Not dismissive.
Just absent.
As though part of him never fully arrived anymore.
"Working?"
Daniel gave a short laugh.
The sound carried no amusement.
"Always."
Emma smiled faintly.
Normally he would have smiled back.
Today he simply returned his attention to the papers.
The silence stretched.
Outside, someone was walking a dog beneath their apartment block.
Children played somewhere in the distance.
The afternoon felt calm.
Inside the apartment, Daniel looked anything but calm.
His phone lit up.
Immediately his eyes moved toward it.
Email.
He opened it.
Read it.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
Emma noticed.
A few minutes later, he checked the same message again.
Then again.
The behavior seemed unusual.
Almost restless.
The kind of thing people did when waiting for something.
Or worried about something.
She leaned back slightly.
"Everything okay?"
The question sounded casual.
Normal.
The kind married people asked every day.
Daniel's eyes remained on the laptop.
"Yeah."
A few seconds passed.
Then:
"Just busy."
The answer arrived automatically.
Too automatically.
Emma had heard it before.
Many times.
Just busy.
Work stuff.
Long day.
A lot going on.
Different words.
Similar meaning.
Yet today the explanation felt incomplete.
Daniel clicked into another email.
Read it.
Checked the time.
Looked at the report again.
The movement carried tension she couldn't quite identify.
Not frustration.
Not annoyance.
Something else.
Something quieter.
Emma studied him carefully.
The dark circles beneath his eyes looked deeper.
His shoulders seemed tighter.
His attention felt fractured.
Like someone constantly expecting another message to arrive.
The laptop screen reflected in his glasses.
Rows of numbers.
Charts.
Reports.
Targets.
Things Emma couldn't fully understand.
She wasn't sure what Daniel spent hours reading every night.
Only that the stack never seemed to shrink.
A notification appeared.
Daniel immediately picked up his phone.
Read it.
Set it down.
Then picked it up again less than a minute later.
Emma frowned slightly.
That wasn't normal.
Even for Daniel.
She thought back to the past few weeks.
The late nights.
The constant checking.
The reports.
The growing silence.
The way he seemed present physically but elsewhere mentally.
The pieces began fitting together.
Not clearly.
Just enough.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
This time Daniel looked up.
Actually looked up.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Emma expected irritation.
Or exhaustion.
Or distraction.
Instead she saw something unexpected.
Fear.
Not strong enough to name immediately.
Not obvious.
Just a brief glimpse before it disappeared.
Daniel smiled.
A practiced smile.
The kind people used when they wanted a conversation to end gently.
"I'm fine."
Emma held his gaze for another second.
Then nodded.
"Okay."
She didn't push.
Didn't ask more questions.
Didn't know what question to ask.
Daniel returned to the laptop.
The reports.
The emails.
The constant checking.
The endless cycle.
Emma sat quietly beside him.
Watching.
Thinking.
For months she had believed work was taking his time.
Now she wasn't so sure.
Time wasn't the only thing work was taking.
Something else had changed.
Something deeper.
Something she didn't yet understand.
The afternoon continued around them.
The fruit remained untouched.
The reports remained open.
The emails kept arriving.
And Daniel kept checking them.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Emma looked at him one last time.
Not tired.
Not stressed.
Not exactly.
Something else.
Something she could finally see.
But not yet explain.
Busy wasn't the right word anymore.
