Still Choosing You
Book 1 Chapter 5 — Scene 7: THE NEW ROUTINE
Wednesday evening.
The rice cooker clicked at six twenty-eight.
Emma stood up from the sofa.
The movement was automatic.
Dinner time.
The apartment was quiet.
Outside, traffic drifted through the open window.
Inside, everything followed a familiar pattern.
Emma moved into the kitchen.
Opened the rice cooker.
Prepared her plate.
One portion.
Not two.
That had changed recently.
Not intentionally.
Just practically.
The second portion would stay in the pot until Daniel arrived.
Whenever that happened.
At six thirty-five, her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
Daniel.
Running late.
Don't wait.
Emma read the message.
Then placed the phone down.
Okay.
She replied without thinking.
A few seconds later, she sat at the dining table.
Alone.
Again.
The chair across from her remained empty.
The sight no longer surprised her.
She finished dinner.
Washed the dishes.
Wiped the table.
Packed away leftovers.
The entire routine took less than an hour.
By seven thirty, the kitchen was clean.
The apartment looked settled for the night.
Emma switched on the television.
A familiar drama played in the background.
She folded laundry while watching.
Then watered the plants near the window.
Then replied to a message from a friend.
The evening continued.
Complete.
Whole.
Independent.
At eight forty-five, she checked the time.
Not because she was waiting.
Only out of habit.
No new messages.
The apartment remained peaceful.
Emma continued reading her book.
The story held her attention for nearly an hour.
Eventually she glanced toward the clock again.
Ten seventeen.
The realization arrived quietly.
Most of her evening was already over.
Without Daniel.
She had eaten.
Finished the chores.
Relaxed.
Read several chapters.
Prepared tomorrow's clothes.
Brushed her teeth.
The day was almost finished.
A little before eleven, the front door opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
Tired.
More tired than usual.
His tie was loosened.
His shoulders slightly slumped.
The apartment lights were dim.
The television volume low.
For a moment, Daniel looked around.
As though arriving somewhere already in progress.
Or perhaps already completed.
Emma looked up from the sofa.
"You're home."
Daniel smiled weakly.
"Sorry."
The apology felt familiar.
Emma nodded.
"It's okay."
Daniel glanced toward the dining table.
Empty.
Clean.
No dishes.
No signs of dinner.
Everything had already happened.
He walked into the kitchen.
Opened the refrigerator.
Found the food waiting.
Covered carefully.
Labeled in the way Emma always organized leftovers.
Daniel smiled slightly.
A small feeling of gratitude warmed him.
She really was being understanding lately.
No complaints.
No pressure.
No disappointment.
At least none he could see.
He heated the food.
Ate quietly at the dining table.
The same table Emma had used hours earlier.
When he finished, she was already preparing to go to bed.
Daniel placed his plate into the sink.
"You don't have to wait up for me."
Emma looked toward him.
"I know."
The answer was simple.
Gentle.
Honest.
Daniel smiled.
To him, it sounded healthy.
Reasonable.
A sign that they were adapting.
He felt relieved.
The adjustment seemed to be working.
The pressure at work remained difficult.
But at least things at home felt easier.
Emma switched off the television.
The room darkened.
Daniel followed her toward the bedroom.
Neither said much.
There wasn't much to say.
The evening had already happened.
Together, they moved through the final minutes of the night.
Yet Emma couldn't shake a small realization.
The evening no longer waited for Daniel to begin.
It simply continued without him.
And somewhere over the past few weeks, that had started to feel normal.
Daniel never noticed.
He only noticed that Emma asked less.
He thought things were improving.
Emma wondered if this was simply who they were becoming.
The apartment fell quiet.
Another day finished.
Another routine completed.
Another evening that had learned how to continue without him.
