Still Choosing You
Book 1 Chapter 4 — Scene 7: THE LATE NIGHTS CONTINUED
The first week became the second.
The second became the third.
At some point, Emma stopped counting the days.
The routine counted them instead.
A message arriving before dinner.
Working late.
Eat first.
Coming home after dark.
Promising things would settle down soon.
The pattern repeated often enough that it no longer felt unusual.
On Tuesday, Daniel arrived home at eight.
On Wednesday, nearly nine.
On Thursday, he brought work home.
Not much.
Just a laptop and a spreadsheet he wanted to review before bed.
At least that was what he said.
Emma sat on the sofa while he worked at the dining table.
The television played quietly.
The apartment lights reflected off the laptop screen.
Daniel remained focused.
Typing.
Reading.
Checking.
Correcting.
Hours passed.
Eventually Emma looked at the clock.
Ten twenty-three.
Daniel was still working.
"Almost done?" she asked.
He glanced up.
"Yeah."
Then he looked at the screen again.
The answer sounded sincere.
An hour later, he was still there.
Not because he had lied.
Because more work kept appearing.
Another email.
Another update.
Another report.
The laptop remained open.
The night grew later.
The pattern repeated again the following week.
And the week after that.
Nothing dramatic happened.
No arguments.
No ultimatums.
No emotional confrontation.
Life simply adjusted around the new reality.
Dinner happened whenever Daniel arrived.
Weekends became uncertain.
Plans became tentative.
Work remained present.
Always present.
One evening, Emma stood in the kitchen preparing dinner.
The rice cooker clicked.
Steam rose from the vegetables.
The apartment smelled of garlic and soup.
Her phone vibrated.
She already knew who it was.
Before opening the message, she knew what it would say.
She wasn't trying to be pessimistic.
She simply knew.
The message appeared.
Sorry.
Running late again.
Eat first.
Emma stared at the screen.
Not surprised.
Not upset.
Just familiar.
Outside the kitchen window, evening settled over the city.
Inside, dinner waited on the table.
Two bowls.
Two pairs of chopsticks.
Two places prepared.
The same as always.
She placed the phone down.
Then continued arranging the table.
Across the city, Daniel sat beneath office lights.
The report in front of him wasn't the first.
It wouldn't be the last.
Around him, employees were beginning to leave for the evening.
Chairs rolled back.
Monitors switched off.
Conversations faded.
The office slowly emptied.
Daniel remained at his desk.
Just a little longer.
Just until this report was finished.
Just until things settled down.
Just for a while.
He still believed it.
Emma still believed it too.
Neither of them realized that the explanation had already become a routine.
The late nights had started as an exception.
Then they became a phase.
Then they became normal.
Daniel looked at the clock.
Emma looked at the empty chair across from her.
And somewhere between them, another evening quietly disappeared.
The late nights continued.
