Still Choosing You

Book 1 Chapter 4 — Scene 5: IT'S OKAY

At eight thirty-one, Daniel finally closed the laptop.

The sound was soft.

Still, Emma heard it immediately.

She looked up from the sofa.

The television remained on.

The same program had been playing for nearly an hour.

Neither of them had paid much attention to it.

Daniel rubbed his eyes.

Then leaned back in his chair.

The exhaustion remained visible.

The work emergency had consumed most of the evening.

The dinner reservation had long passed.

Outside, Saturday night continued without them.

Inside, the apartment felt unusually quiet.

Daniel glanced at the clock.

For a second, he simply stared at it.

Then he looked toward Emma.

The realization arrived all at once.

The missed dinner.

The cancelled plan.

The lost evening.

"I'm sorry."

The words came quietly.

Emma already knew what he was apologizing for.

"It's okay."

Daniel lowered his eyes briefly.

"I know we had plans."

"It's fine."

She smiled.

A small smile.

Easy.

Gentle.

The kind that asked for nothing.

Daniel studied her face for a moment.

Perhaps expecting disappointment.

Perhaps expecting frustration.

Neither appeared.

Only calm.

The relief showed immediately.

Not because he didn't care.

Because guilt had been sitting on him for hours.

"Thanks for understanding."

Emma nodded.

"Work happens."

Daniel let out a slow breath.

"Yeah."

The conversation could have ended there.

In many ways, it already had.

Daniel stood and walked toward the kitchen.

A few minutes later, he returned with a glass of water.

The apartment settled back into silence.

Normal silence.

Comfortable silence.

The kind married couples shared every day.

At least from the outside.

Emma watched the television.

Daniel checked his phone once.

Then put it down.

The crisis appeared finished.

The evening appeared settled.

Everything should have felt better.

Instead, Emma found herself staring at the dark television reflection rather than the actual program.

It's okay.

The words echoed quietly in her mind.

And they were true.

Mostly.

She wasn't angry.

Daniel hadn't cancelled because he didn't care.

He hadn't forgotten.

He hadn't chosen something more enjoyable.

Work had simply taken the evening away.

Again.

That was what made it difficult.

There was no villain.

No obvious mistake.

No person to blame.

Only another plan that hadn't happened.

Another small disappointment that made perfect sense.

Another reasonable explanation.

Emma folded her hands in her lap.

She remembered looking forward to tonight earlier in the week.

The restaurant.

The walk afterward.

The conversation they rarely seemed to have anymore.

Nothing important.

Just time together.

Now the evening was almost over.

And neither of them had left the apartment.

Across the room, Daniel looked less stressed than he had a few hours earlier.

The work issue was gone.

The relief on his face was real.

Emma was glad for that.

She truly was.

Yet another feeling sat quietly beneath it.

A feeling she didn't examine too closely.

Not sadness exactly.

Not frustration.

Something smaller.

A little disappointment left with nowhere to go.

Daniel glanced over.

"You want to watch something else?"

Emma blinked.

"Hm?"

"The show."

"Oh."

She looked at the screen.

"I don't mind."

Daniel picked up the remote.

The channel changed.

A different program appeared.

The moment passed.

Or seemed to.

Emma leaned back against the sofa.

Daniel settled into his seat.

The apartment looked peaceful.

The evening looked ordinary.

No argument.

No tension.

No hurt feelings spoken aloud.

Just a husband grateful for understanding.

And a wife who had become very good at saying,

"It's okay."

Even when part of her wished the evening had gone differently.
